Shopify Messaging
vs Klaviyo

A decision about your workflow, your audience, and how much configuration you want to manage.

The short answer

Start by evaluating Shopify Messaging if keeping email work within Shopify is your priority. Evaluate Klaviyo if you want a separate platform for configuring customer segments and flows. Compare one real workflow and a quote for your actual audience before moving.

Begin with the work you do every week

Shopify Messaging keeps campaign work close to the store administration you already use. Klaviyo synchronizes Shopify data into a separate marketing platform. Both have campaigns and automations; the existence of a feature alone does not settle the choice.

Build the same small campaign in each candidate: select a product, define the audience, preview the message, and find the exclusion and scheduling controls. Record the steps you can complete and the ones that need setup or help.

Price the account, not just the list

Shopify's email billing is based on email volume after its included allowance. Klaviyo describes active-profile and email-send allowances. Four campaigns sent to 1,000 recipients mean 4,000 campaign sends in either calculation, but that does not tell you how many profiles an account bills for.

Use the email send planner for the volume arithmetic. Then check the audience count and requested features in each account's current offer. SMS and other services need their own estimate.

Use a small trial that answers a decision

  1. List the campaign or automation you want to run, including who should be excluded.
  2. Use a sample of your catalog to preview the customer-facing result.
  3. Inspect subscription status and the definition of the target audience.
  4. Compare the monthly account estimate at your current size and the next threshold.
  5. Check what would need to move: templates, segments, subscription state, and active flows.

You do not need to turn on two overlapping automations to compare their setup. Keep track of which tool currently owns each message before activating a replacement.

Make the decision specific

“I can run my planned newsletter with the included tools” is a useful finding. So is “I need this exact segment and can maintain it in the new platform.” Neither requires a claim that one app is universally better.

If both handle the job, compare the ongoing account cost and the work needed to run it. If one does not, document the missing requirement rather than substituting a larger feature count.
