Costs explained

What actually counts toward your email marketing bill?

Separate contacts, campaign sends, automation volume, and SMS segments before comparing email marketing prices.

The short answer

An email marketing bill can depend on your billable audience, message volume, plan, and extras. Count those separately before comparing advertised starting prices.

The campaign math
5,000recipients per campaign
4campaigns this month
20,000campaign sends
Illustrative volume only. Billable automation emails and resends add to this total; billable audience is counted separately.

Start with three different numbers

Imagine a store with 8,000 customer records, 5,000 email subscribers, and four campaigns planned for the month. These are different quantities. A customer record is not automatically a subscribed recipient, and a subscribed recipient is not one monthly email.

If all four campaigns go to the same 5,000 people, that is 20,000 planned campaign sends. Welcome messages, post-purchase messages, resends, and other automations can add to that total. This is an illustrative calculation, not a provider quote.

5,000 recipients × 4 campaigns = 20,000 sends

Check the audience meter

Find the exact definition of a billable contact or profile in the plan you are evaluating. Do not assume that every provider counts your imported records in the same way.

Klaviyo's documentation describes active-profile and email-send allowances. Sending a campaign to a smaller segment may reduce sends without changing the profile tier. Profile enforcement at renewal also differs from optional upgrades for message volume. Read Klaviyo's billing explanation.

Before a large import, record your current billable audience, the next threshold, and your renewal date. That gives you a concrete question to resolve before your monthly charge changes.

Check what counts as a send

Write down your planned campaigns, average audience per campaign, and expected automation volume. Use a range for automations if you do not have history yet. A range makes the uncertainty visible instead of hiding it in a precise-looking total.

Shopify counts one campaign sent to 800 addresses as 800 emails. Its pricing documentation distinguishes ordinary email automations from abandoned-checkout automations, which are excluded from the monthly count. See Shopify's counting rules.

Our email send planner helps with the arithmetic. Enter only the automation sends your selected provider would bill; the planner does not decide billing eligibility for you.

One SMS on a phone can be several billed segments

For mobile messaging, check recipients, destination, and segments. Long messages and character encoding can change the segment count even when a phone displays the result as one message.

Klaviyo documents a rate × recipients × segments calculation for current mobile billing and explains legacy credits separately. Inspect the composed message's estimate before comparing costs. Read the mobile billing guide.

Make a one-page cost check

  • Your billable audience and its next pricing threshold.
  • Campaign, automation, and resend volume.
  • SMS destinations and expected segments.
  • Included allowances, renewal date, and upgrade behavior.
  • Optional products or services on the account.

Compare the resulting account estimates with the same inputs. The lowest advertised starting price is useful context, but it is not a complete estimate for your store.
