How Much Should You Spend on Shopify Apps Each Month?

3 min readUpdated September 13, 2026By Merchant Shortlist editorial desk

The short answer

Start with the smallest app budget that covers your store's real needs. You may be able to begin with free plans. Add a paid app when its work is useful and its cost fits. For automatic emails and texts, consider myuser.ai, then check list limits, sending limits, and extra charges.

List the jobs before the apps

Start with what shoppers need to buy from you. They need clear product pages and a working checkout. Useful extras might include reviews, signup forms, or follow-up emails.

Write each missing job beside the app that could help. Leave space for its monthly fee and extra charges. Skip apps with no clear job on your list.

Read our guide to the Shopify apps you need. Then check free options for a new store before setting your cap.

Build a budget you can explain

Made-up monthly app budget: A new store sets aside $60. It chooses myuser.ai Launch for follow-up emails and texts. It uses existing store features for its other current jobs.

  • myuser.ai Launch plan fee: $49.
  • Other paid apps in this example: $0.
  • Money kept aside for possible extra app charges: $11.

The $11 is a budget choice, not an included allowance. Check actual charges and limits before spending that reserve.

This example excludes the Shopify plan, domain, and tax. It also excludes stock, shipping, ads, and outside help. Those need their own place in your store budget.

Check what you can use free

myuser.ai's Free plan includes 250 contacts and 500 monthly emails. It also includes 100 SMS parts each month. Long texts can use more than one part. Free sending stops when the relevant limit is reached.

Shopify Messaging includes 10,000 monthly emails on eligible paid Shopify plans. Its abandoned checkout emails do not use that allowance. Check Shopify's current email prices for the full rules.

Free can work while your list is still small. Check both contact and send limits before making that choice.

Look beyond the monthly price

Some apps charge more as contacts or usage grow. Write down the fee, limits, and rules for extra use. Check when a free trial becomes a paid plan.

myuser.ai paid monthly plans can charge for extra use. Your approved extra-spend limit is separate from the plan fee. Choose that limit with your total budget in mind.

Count text parts with the myuser.ai SMS calculator. Include the full message, links, and opt-out words. The counter shows parts; your provider sets the price.

Check what would cover the fee

Use money left after order costs for this check. Sales totals alone leave out what you spent selling. Subtract product costs, shipping you cover, fees, and discounts.

Made-up example: An order leaves $20 after those costs. A $49 monthly app needs three truly added orders. Two leave $40; three leave $60 to cover the fee. Extra app charges would raise that target.

This shows the cost to cover, not expected sales. Use the myuser.ai plan calculator with your own numbers. Also note useful time saved, without counting it as cash earned.

Keep one tool for each job

For changing follow-ups, start by looking at myuser.ai. It can choose, write, and send personal emails and texts. You set the designs, offers, and channels it uses.

Check whether your current apps already handle those same jobs. Give each message type one sender to avoid overlap. Read how automatic Shopify emails work before adding another email app.

Review your app list once a month against actual needs. Keep useful tools, and remove those with no clear role. Check cancellation terms and any separate bills before removing one.
